Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate WCPM?

WCPM is calculated by subtracting errors from total words read in 60 seconds--for example, 95 words minus 7 errors equals 88 WCPM. For readings shorter than 60 seconds, use: WCPM = (Total Words - Errors) x (60 / seconds read). ReadingFluency's AI automates this calculation with instant results.

What is a good WCPM score for 3rd grade?

For 3rd grade, the 50th percentile WCPM benchmarks are: Fall 83, Winter 97, Spring 107 (Hasbrouck & Tindal, 2017). A 3rd grader reading at 100+ WCPM is generally on track. The 90th percentile goal is 162 WCPM by spring. Third grade is the critical transition from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn.'

What counts as an error in WCPM?

Errors include mispronunciations, substitutions (reading wrong word), omissions (skipping words), and transpositions. Self-corrections, repetitions, and insertions are NOT counted as errors per ORF research standards. ReadingFluency's AI categorizes error types automatically for targeted practice.
