Grades 1–5 WCPM benchmarks (Hasbrouck & Tindal, 2017)

The table lists words correct per minute at the 90th, 75th, 50th, 25th, and 10th percentiles for fall, winter, and spring. The 50th percentile row is a typical reader for that grade and season; the 90th is a strong reader. First grade has no fall norm because most first graders are not yet reading connected text in September.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good WCPM for my child's grade?

Find the grade and season in the table and read the 50th percentile row: that is a typical reader. Hasbrouck & Tindal (2017) put spring at 60 WCPM for 1st grade, 100 for 2nd, 112 for 3rd, 133 for 4th, and 146 for 5th.

What does the 50th percentile mean?

Half of the students in the norm sample read faster and half read slower. It is the middle of the distribution for that grade and season, not a minimum requirement.

How often should I check reading fluency?

The norms are published for fall, winter, and spring, which is the benchmark schedule most schools follow. A student receiving extra support is usually checked more often, every one to four weeks, so the trend is visible.

Do I need the PDF to use the chart?

No. Every number on this page comes from the same norms as the PDF. The PDF is a printable one-page layout for a binder or a parent conference.
