Frequently Asked Questions

What does WCPM stand for?

WCPM stands for Words Correct Per Minute--a standardized measure of oral reading fluency used in schools nationwide. WCPM captures both reading speed and accuracy in a single number. A student reads a grade-level passage aloud for 60 seconds, and WCPM equals total words read minus errors. It is the gold standard metric recommended by the National Reading Panel and used in RTI/MTSS frameworks.

How is WCPM calculated?

WCPM = Total Words Read in 60 Seconds minus Errors. Errors include mispronunciations, substitutions, omissions, and transpositions. Self-corrections within 3 seconds, repetitions, and insertions do NOT count as errors per ORF research standards. In a standard 60-second ORF assessment, simply subtract those errors from the total words read. ReadingFluency automates this with AI transcription and instant scoring.

What is a good WCPM score?

A good WCPM score is at or above the 50th percentile for the student's grade and time of year (Hasbrouck & Tindal 2017 norms). Key K-5 50th percentile spring benchmarks are: 1st grade 60 WCPM, 2nd grade 100, 3rd grade 112, 4th grade 133, and 5th grade 146. Students 10 or more words below the 50th percentile may need additional support or intervention.
