Instead of measuring words per minute, kindergarten assessments focus on: Letter naming fluency: How many uppercase and lowercase letters can the child name in one minute? Phoneme segmentation: Can the child break a word like "cat" into its individual sounds (/k/ /a/ /t/)? Nonsense word fluency: Can the child sound out made-up words like "tob" or "mip"?
